The Family Crest’s music is sweeping, wall-of-sound indie rock that alludes to fellow strings-adorned bands such as Tindersticks and Arcade Fire.
WHERE TO HEAR THE FAMILY CREST
The Family Crest will play Friday, Jan. 7 at Aubergine After Dark, 755 Petaluma Ave., Sebastopol. The show starts at 10 p.m. Cover is $5.
The Family Crest has established its own Left Coast identity, nodding to ’60s San Francisco baroque pop and folk-rock, as well. “This is lush and intricate music, demanding the breadth of a full-length release,” according to MadeLoud.com.
The Family Crest began as a collaborative recording project in 2008 with a vision to change the way music is made. Gathering friends, fans, musicians, and non-musicians alike, the group began to record songs in bars, churches, streets and other unconventional locations. Their collaborative approach quickly grew steam, evolving into a seven-piece orchestral indie rock band with over 100 “extended family members” participating in recordings, live performances and media projects.
Drawing from rock, jazz, folk, and classical styles, the Family Crest has firmly established itself in the San Francisco Bay Area. Shortly following the release of their debut EP, “Songs from the Valley Below” in 2010, the group was chosen for KFOG Radio’s Local Scene 7 CD, a compilation album featuring Bay Area artists that “need to be heard.” In addition, the band frequently performs at diverse Bay Area venues, from intimate acoustic cafe shows to larger, plugged-in establishments.
The Family Crest finished production for their debut album, “The Village,” in the fall of 2010. Continuing in the spirit of making music ‘for the people, by the people,’ “The Village” was supported by over 140 donors through a fund-raising campaign on Kickstarter.com. “The Village” will premiere at the Family Crest’s CD release show at Cafe Du Nord in San Francisco on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011.
