A Marin County judge ruled that $1.4 million in restitution still must be paid to the family of a Novato girl who was killed by a drunk driver, even though the driver is now dead.
Edward Schaefer was fatally stabbed in July, just weeks after arriving at San Quentin State Prison to serve a sentence for second-degree murder.
Judge Terrence Boren ruled Monday that Schaefer's estate still must pay the restitution to the family of 9-year-old Melody Osheroff and her father, Aaron, who was seriously injured in the crash.
