A Novato man died Thursday at a Sonoma gun range after apparently accidentally shooting himself in the chest, sheriff's officials said.

Jay Sitton, 55, was skeet shooting at the Black Point Sports Club on Lakeville Highway when a club employee found him around 1:15 p.m. on the ground next to his pickup.

The truck's door was open and a shotgun was discovered in the cab facing outward, said Lt. Bret Sackett of the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.

“It appears the subject accidently shot himself as he removed the shotgun from the back seat,” Sackett said in a statement.

Sitton had purchased shooting supplies from the club office and spent about an hour on the range. He was the only one using the range at the time. He went back to the office to request additional time and returned to the range, according to Sackett. The employee found him about an hour later.

The private shooting club is located south of Sonoma raceway amid vineyards and hay fields overlooking San Pablo Bay.

“We are very saddened and shocked by the accident and our condolences go out to the family,” John Heim, an attorney for the club. “It is a tragedy.”
