NOVATO — The family of a 9-year-old girl killed by a drunken motorcyclist in a Novato crosswalk has reached a $675,000 settlement with the city.
The settlement with the family of Melody Osheroff was reported Tuesday by the Marin Independent Journal (http://bit.ly/Vbn66U). Although the city did not admit wrongdoing, it also agreed to construct a memorial for the girl.
Osheroff and her father, 41-year-old Aaron, were struck by 44-year-old Edward Schaefer in May 2009. Aaron Osheroff had to have a leg amputated.
Schaefer was convicted in May on charges including second-degree murder and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. He was later killed by an inmate at San Quentin State Prison, where he was serving his sentence.
Osheroff's family sued Schaefer's presumed estate and the city of Novato, claiming the city had not properly maintained the road or the crosswalk.
