Firefighters and a hazardous materials team continued working Tuesday morning at the rural Petaluma remains of a destroyed house, which burned during the night.
Cal Fire and Petaluma fire engines arrived first, at 3:50 a.m., to the home tucked away down a long, narrow and very muddy lane. Stadler Lane is off of Eastman Lane.
Twelve fire agencies responded to the fire, which was in the Wilmar fire district. Other agencies included Rancho Adobe, Schell-Vista and San Antonio.
The home apparently wasn't occupied, but was full of property. The yard around the 1,600-square-foot home was covered with items including 12 vehicles, a boat and camper.
Arriving firefighters found the home engulfed in flames, said Bob Borges, captain for Sonoma County fire.
The fire was kept from spreading to nearby homes but the house was too far gone to save, said Borges.
No one was living in the home at the time, although whether someone might have been inside remained unknown.
Crews still needed to go through the site and remove debris. Investigators also were attempting to determine what sparked the blaze.
A hazardous materials crew was called out Tuesday due to the numerous containers found in the aftermath, which had been filled with unknown materials.
The house was a total loss, said Borges.
