A Petaluma woman was injured early Tuesday in a collision with a wrong-way driver on Highway 101 near the Redwood Sanitary Landfill, CHP officials said.

Janice Morante, 58, suffered moderate injuries in the crash, reported at 4:06 a.m., officials said.

Wrong-way driver Champin Chen, 30, of San Diego suffered minor injuries and was arrested on suspicion of intoxicated driving, the CHP said.

Morante was heading north in a 2004 Nissan in the fast lane of the highway Chen approached in a 2008 Mazda, also in the fast lane but heading the wrong way, according to the CHP.

Both drivers tried to swerve to miss each other, but the cars crashed, hitting the front passenger-sides and causing major damage to both cars.

Chen's Mazda ended up on the shoulder, partially blocking the slow lane. Morante's Nissan landed in the grassy center divider, crashing into a guard rail.

Morante and Chen were both taken to Marin General Hospital to be treated for their injuries, CHP officials said.
