Crab feed season heating up

Crab Feed Update: There are at least six crab feeds taking place this weekend and if you are crab-obsessed, you could make it to three of them. And if you can't make it this weekend, no worries: By last count, there are nine local crab feeds taking place next weekend.

Here's the round up:

In Santa Rosa, Active 20-30 of the Redwood Empire hosts its crab feed from 6 to 11 p.m. (dinner starts at 7 p.m.) at The Becker Center of St. Eugene's Church (2323 Montgomery Dr.). Cost is $45 per person and you must be 21 or older to attend. The menu includes pasta, salad, bread and all the crab you can eat, along with complimentary soft drinks and a no-host bar. There will be live entertainment and a silent auction. Proceeds benefit Children's Charities of Sonoma County. For tickets, call 953-5034.

The Santa Rosa High School Foundation hosts its crab feed on Saturday, too, at the Veteran's Memorial Building (1351 Maple Ave.) from 5:30 to 9 p.m. In addition to crab, there will be ceviche, clam chowder, Caesar salad and more, along with a live and silent auction, a no-host bar and an appearance by the school's cheerleading squad. Cost is $50 per person and you must be 21 or over to attend. For tickets, call 571-7747.

Piner Olivet Charter School and Jack London Elementary School have teamed up for their crab feed, which takes place at 8500 Old Redwood Highway in Windsor on Saturday, beginning at 5:30 p.m. In addition to crab, salad, bread and pasta, there will be Mexican-inspired appetizers and desserts, including tamales, chips and salsa and tres de leche cake. Cost is $45 per person. For tickets, call 328-7359.

In Sebastopol, The Sebastopol Masonic Center's Spark Plug program hosts its annual crab feed on Saturday, with two seatings, one at 5:30 and one at 7 P.m. There will be crab, green salad, pasta and garlic bread, with a no-host bar. Desserts will also be available for purchase. Cost is $45 per pereson for adults, $25 for kids aged 6 to 12 and free for kids under 6. For tickets, call 695-3967. Proceeds benefit the Spark Plug program, which raises money for local public schools.

In Petaluma, the 7-11 Lions Club hosts a two-part crab feed, with one seating from noon to 1:30 p.m. and another from 7 to 8 p.m. If you'd prefer lunch, the cost is $40 and includes pasta, salad and French bread; no-host cocktails will be served as of 11:30 a.m. Dinner, which is $45 per person, begins with cocktails at 5:30 and dinner at 7 p.m. There will also be a huge raffle and a silent auction. Finally, on Sunday the Bodega Bay Grange hosts its annual Crab Cioppino Feed, a tradition that began in 1953. There are four seatings, at noon, at 1:30 p.m., at 3 p.m. and at 4:30 p.m. Cost is $45 per person for adutls and $22.50 for kids 12 and under. For reservations, which are essential, call 875-3616.

Make a basket, love your Laguna: This Saturday, Charlie Kennard, a longtime student of California Indian basketry, leads a coiled-straw basket workshop at the Laguna de Santa Rosa Environmental Center (900 Sanford Road, Santa Rosa).

Kennard will use Harding grass, an invasive plant not native to California, and Juncus, a roadside grass, to make traditional baskets.

The workshop takes place in Heron Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and involves fairly strenuous work. It is open to adults 18 years and older and costs $75 per person, or $65 for foundation members. A dough basket will be used to make sourdough bread for lunch.

La Poste's Cassoulet: Chef Rob Larman teams up with Valley Wine Shack (553 West Napa St., Sonoma) to recreate a dinner that was hugely popular at Larman's tiny La Poste Bistro, which closed several years ago.

Dinner, which is $35 per person, begins with a salad of butter lettuce and Dijon vinaigrette. Next comes the cassoulet, featuring duck confit, garlic and duck sausage and heirloom beans.

For dessert? What else but Larman's famous Valrhona chocolate mousse.

Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. For reservations, call 938-7218.

Sweet Aloha at Sweet T's: This Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m., Da Puna Bruddahs will perform their beautiful Hawaiian music at Sweet T's (2097 Stagecoach Rd., Santa Rosa).

They'll return on the first Sunday of February and March. There is no cover charge.

Sweet T's is an American restaurant with a Southern focus, featuring dishes such as cheese grits, hushpuppies, brisket, ribs, black-eye peas, cole slaw, deviled eggs and fried chicken.

If you want to find a comfy spot to enjoy the music, we recommend arriving early. Da Bruddahs are developing quite a following and when we've seen them here, it's gotten quite crowded fairly early.

Outstanding Oolongs: On Saturday, Many Rivers Books & Tea (130 Main St., Suite 101, Sebastopol) features the highly prized and praised Oolong teas in the store's monthly tasting.

A flight of Oolong teas will be presented at 2 p.m., along with lots of questions, comments and lively conversation. Oolong teas widely vary, ranging from pale green and gold to almost black, with a huge array of unique, sexy, spicy and almost heartbreakingly delicate flavors and textures.

The tasting is conducted by the Many Rivers staff and there is no charge, though a donation to help cover the cost of the teas is great appreciated.

Reservations are not necessary; just show up.

Thorn Hill Vineyards Hosts Sunday Supper: If you're looking for a road trip, you might consider heading to Lake County, where Thorn Hill Vineyards' Red Hill Tasting Room (8170 South Highway 29, Lower Lake) is hosting the Sunday Supper Club on the last Sunday of each month. Service is from 4 to 7 p.m.

This Sunday's menu features a salad of endive, arugula and mache with Champagne vinaigrette, Yerba Santa chevre and pickled lentils, paired with Thorn Hill Chardonnay and Coq au Vin, the classic bistro dish of chicken, bacon, carrots, onions and thyme braised in red wine and served with egg noodles and French green bean, paired with Thorn Hill Pinot Noir.

For dessert, it's an apple tart tatin, with Thorn Hill Late Harvest Semillon.

There will be live music by Michael Barrish during supper.

Cost is $40 per person and $75 per couple; the price includes food, wine pairings and gratuity.
