Casa Grande High School’s girls basketball team took a roller-coaster ride last week.
First the Lady Gauchos reached happy heights with a 66-41 win over previously North Bay League unbeaten Santa Rosa, then they took an emotional plunge with a 52-24 loss to Montgomery,
The games were more than emotional contrasts.
Playing at home against the towering Lady Panthers, Casa Grande sizzled as a team from the floor, with seven different players connecting from 3-point range. They scored 13 3-pointers in the game. At Montgomery, they managed just four connections from beyond the arc.
Brooke Santander led the hot-shooting Lady Gauchos against Santa Rosa with 19 points, with teammate Allie Fausoni chipping in with 10. No Casa player could score with consistency against Montgomery. Lexi Schloetter led the team with six points.
Casa Grande played exception defense against Santa Rosa, denying the Lady Panthers the opportunity to get the ball inside to its post players. Dayna Dolcini had an exceptional game against taller opponents, playing strong defense, grabbing 10 rebounds and making five steals. Montgomery’s 6-foot Claire Donnelly dominated the inside in her game, scoring 17 points. Diminutive guard Madison Nordby bedeviled the Lady Gauchos with her ball handling, defense and occasional 3-point shot, finishing with nine points.
