Chronicle tasting open to public
Up for some top-rate sipping? The finale of the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition is a public tasting of the best and brightest wines on Feb. 16th. It's at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and it costs $70 in advance, $85 at the door. For tickets and information, www.winejudging.com.

Dine around town for Jazz Festival
Jazz on the Menu, a benefit for the Healdsburg Jazz Festival, blends the melody of wine, the harmony of food and the rhythm of music on Feb. 7 at a dozen restaurants in the Healdsburg area.
Small jazz ensembles will play while diners order dinner from the menu. The dine-around takes place from 6 to 9 p.m., and everyone is invited to enjoy dessert and two jazz bands at the Costeaux Bakery & Cafe after 7:30 p.m.
Tickets to the after-party are $10 per person, with jazz provided by the Healdsburg High School Jazz Band and the Noel Jewkes Quintet. Early tickets to the after-party can be purchased at www.healdsburgjazz.org, or call 433-4644. Make dinner reservations at one of the 12 participating restaurants.
Participating Healdsburg restaurants include Agave, Baci Cafe & Wine Bar, Barndiva, Bistro Ralph, Campo Fina, Charcuterie, Dry Creek Kitchen, Healdsburg Bar & Grill, Spoonbar and Zin. Geyserville restaurants include Catelli's and Diavola PIzzeria.
All funds from the evening go to support the music education programs of the Healdsburg Jazz Festival.
Toast to Scotland's own in poetry, drink
The Camellia Inn will celebrate the life and poetry of Robert Burns during its annual Robert Burns Dinner on Feb. 10 at the Healdsburg inn.
The traditional supper includes a Scottish soup course, Haggis carried by the cook and led by a bagpiper, Mashed Tatties and Neeps and a dessert, all washed down with a Scotch whisky.
Speeches, toasts, poetry recitation and songs round out the dinner. Lodging package, which includes dinner, is $449 for a king room and $369 for queen room. 211 North St. 433-8182.
Early Mardi Gras at Meadowcroft
Meadowcroft Wines will get a jump on Fat Tuesday when it celebrates Mardi Gras from noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 9 at the tasting room at Cornerstone Sonoma.
The third annual party will offer music by Petaluma's Rhythmtown Jive band, which will launch the party by leading a second-line parade through the gardens.
On the menu will be authentic Louisiana fare: Crawfish Etouffee from Baton Rouge, Red Beans and Rice with Cajun Sausage from Eunice, Louisiana Sensation Salad, French bread and King Cake from New Orleans.

LaSalette Restaurant in Sonoma has launched its Crab Tuesday, celebrating the Dungeness Crab season with a complete crab dinner for $35 on Tuesdays.
The dinner includes Hearts of Romaine Salad, Garlic Buttered Penne Pasta with Topo Cheese, Mom's Amazing Portuguese Spiced Crab Stew, Garlic Bread and your choice of housemade ice cream or sorbet.

Paws for Love benefit at Finley
The 14th annual Paws for Love Gala will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Finley Community Center in Santa Rosa.
The evening includes wine and hors d'oeuvres, auction and music, and a cruise raffle.

Murder mystery at Deerfield Ranch
Deerfield Ranch Winery will host a Murder Mystery in the Cave at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Kenwood tasting room.
The wild whodunnit takes guests on a subterranean mystery full of wine-industry intrigue.

Presentation by health authors
Judi and Shari Zucker, authors of "Double Your Energy, Double Your Health," will give a talk and book-signing from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club.
The authors, who are based in Santa Barbara, focus on nutrition and physical education. Their most recent book is "The Ultimate Allergy-Free Snack Cookbook," which includes more than 100 allergen-free, kid-friendly recipes.
The talk is sponsored by Women's Health at Memorial Hospital (WHAM), a group of women who gather for fun, health-focused activities.

Muscardini opens new tasting room
Kenwood boasts a new tasting room. Muscardini Cellars opened its own tasting room in the Red School House at 9380 Sonoma Highway, just south of its previous location where it shared a tasting room with Ty Caton Vineyards. The Red School House dates to the 1860s and the historic tasting room also offers a patio with a view facing east toward the Mayacama Mountains.
Italian varietals are Muscardini's forte, and inside the tasting room are artisan treats like jams and biscotti, as well as a rotating selection of artwork, a feast for the eyes. Tasting room hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. For more information, call 933-9305.
Annual open house at Krug
Charles Krug Winery will hold its annual open house from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the St. Helena winery.
As spring prepares to make its debut, the winery will unveil its first wine from last harvest, Charles Krug's 2012 St. Helena Sauvignon Blanc.
In addition to the sauvignon blanc, the complimentary tasting will also include the winery's cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, merlot, zinfandel and pinot noir.
