Like many schools in Sonoma County, the Santa Rosa Junior College is looking to taxpayers to help modernize the campus. It plans to seek a $410 million bond measure on the November ballot, which would provide money to upgrade both the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses, along with other improvements. A majority of those who took part in this week’s unofficial online poll said they will not support the measure. Here were some of the comments:

“Proposition 30 raised taxes $10 billion per year for education, and now we need more? Huh?”

-

“We just passed Petaluma’s two school taxes, the city wants to increase the sales tax and the county is waiting in the wings for another tax hike. However, my wages are not increasing.”

-

Yes, yes and yes again. We need to invest in education.

-

“I’m not voting for anything that increases spending.”

-

“How about raising fees for students? That may mean they would have to give up their daily Starbucks.”

-

“The campuses are nice as they are. ”

-

“My taxes already include a Santa Rosa Junior College bond. Why do they feel the need to tax me even more? I’m saying ‘no’ to all new taxes, especially the city sales tax that will go toward salaries and pensions.”

-

“I would support this as education is a key element to a solid community.”

-

“A bond is a loan that would somehow need to be paid back. Explain how it will be paid back and then I will see about supporting this measure. Otherwise, I will not support it.”

-

“Education is the best economic development tool anywhere. And we all benefit from more educational choices and enrichment of our residents.”
