Santa Rosa City Schools officials Wednesday night honored Elsie Allen High School students Cristina Garcia and Alexis Vargas as co-students of the month for February.
Garcia, a junior, and Vargas, a senior, are both members of the Lobos cheerleading squad. The cousins were critically injured in an automobile accident in Mexico on Dec. 23 that took the life of Cristina's mother, María Torres Garcia, 46.
Elsie Allen students and staff, as well as the wider community, have rallied on behalf of the two families with fundraisers and support.
Gabriel Vargas, Alexis's father, said his daughter is preparing for reconstructive surgery in the coming weeks and likely will remain at UCSF for the next month. He accepted the award on her behalf. Garcia received the award while seated in a wheelchair with her infant daughter, Maya, on her lap and her father by her side.
