David and Marilyn (Walter) Chiotti celebrated their 50th anniversary with family and 85 friends at the Flamingo Hotel. The stage was adorned with two mannequins wearing original outfits from the wedding; Marilyn’s beautifully preserved dress and also the mother of the groom’s dress. There were three photo boards displaying pictures that started with their wedding and included highlights of their 50 years together. The couple created a CD of 50 of their favorite songs that played throughout the evening. All of the attendees received a copy of the CD as a gift and memento of the celebration. Their daughter, Tina, owner of Middletown Florist and Gifts, provided the flowers for the occasion.
They were both born and raised in San Francisco but met in Loch Lomond in Lake County while attending a party at a friend’s house. David offered to drive Marilyn back to San Francisco and she accepted. On the trip back home, they stopped in Sonoma at the El Dorado Hotel for dinner. Marilyn laughingly recounts that David wore his heart on his sleeve when he said during dinner, “You’re really cute when you eat soup.” They went out for pizza on their first official date. After they had been going together for six months, David faced the possibility of being called away by the National Guard. They decided rather than wait, they would get married right away.
Their wedding took place at St.
Stevens Catholic Church on Dec. 2, 1962. They lived in Broadmoor Village for 10 years after which they relocated to Santa Rosa, where they still reside.
David worked as a meat cutter. In his spare time, he enjoys restoring cars and also keeps busy with his HO scale train set. Marilyn is a freelance artist and enjoys photography as well. They both attend antique automobile events which gives them the opportunity to show their fine collection of cars including: a 1952 MGTD, 1955 Cadillac, 1930 Model A Ford, 1939 Studebaker, and a 1962 Buick Skylark. The Harvest Fair and Peggy Sue Car Show are favorite local events, but they also travel around the United States and Canada with their antique autos. Marilyn is the current President of the Santa Rosa Symphony League. Her other favorite pastimes are reading, interior design and swimming. Even with all their many and varied interests, they still find time to do gardening.
Family members include: daughter, Tina Stewart, and her husband, Curtis, of Middletown. They have one granddaughter, Tenae.
Marilyn has fond memories of a trip she took with her granddaughter to Europe. Tenae’s friend cancelled at the last minute and Marilyn stepped in as her travel companion. They visited London, Paris, Florence, Venice, Rome, Athens and Santorini.
Their advice for a long and happy marriage is to have patience, understanding and love.
