A right to fear

EDITOR: The U.S. Senate spoke with a clear voice when it voted down measures to ban assault weapons and high-capacity gun magazines and expand background checks. The senators who voted to defeat these measures sent a clear message. Rather than support the safety and security of the American people and the 92 percent of Americans who want some kind of control over the proliferation of assault-style weapons, they chose to support the National Rifle Association and firearms makers.

Clearly, these legislators have decided that re-election is more important than ensuring the safety of Americans. Their reason for defeating these measures is that they support Second Amendment rights, but what about the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? What about Gabrielle Gifford's right to a complete brain? What about the Sandy Hook victims' right to live?

In this new America that our legislators are creating for us, we are guaranteed new rights. We have the right to live in fear of the next massacre. We have the right to worry that it might be our office, our school, our family, our friends. We have the right to live in fear. Is this the America we want? Is this America?
