The pall hanging over the Petaluma area Friday is the result of controlled burns in northwest Marin County, fire officials said.
According to the Marin County Fire Department, several ranchers are conducting controlled vegetation burns with permits. The fires are expected to end by sundown.
The heavy smoke has prompted numerous calls to emergency agencies and media outlets.
