A fire that appears to have started near a barn on Thompson Lane at around 3:30 p.m. spread rapidly Monday afternoon in heavy winds that were gusting close to 30 miles per hour.
The fire was largely contained as of 5 p.m. and evacuations were called off.
Earlier, the sky in northern Petaluma quickly filled with dark smoke as westerly winds carried the blaze and reportedly destroyed several structures on the property.
As of 3:50 p.m., smoke hung over Highway 101 slowing traffic.
For more than an hour, Magnolia and Skillman lanes were shut down to through-traffic and emergency personnel were discussing evacuating residents in the area between Magnolia Ave. and Skillman Ln. and between Thompson Ln. and Gossage Ave.
Those close to the scene were reporting sirens, airplanes flying over and dense smoke.
The Press Democrat reported that the fire covered as much as 25 to 30 acres.
