The most successful season of Petaluma Leghorns baseball came to end with a 10-0 seven-inning loss to Brooklawn, N.J., in the championship game of the American Legion World Series championship game on Tuesday night.
Petaluma finished its sensational season as the second best American Legion baseball team in the country. Over 5,000 teams compete in American Legion baseball.
The Leghorns finished with a 37-15 record and as the California and Western Regional champions.
The difference in the championship game was Brooklawn pitcher, Mike Shawaryn. The 6-foot, 4-inch, 210 pound right-hander threw all seven innings, striking out eight batters.
Petaluma did not have its usual offensive outburst, but the Leghorns should not feel shamed. Shawaryn has quite the résumé. Last June he was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 32nd round of the Major League Baseball draft, though he will attend the University of Maryland instead. He easily hits the low 90s with his fastball and, in his senior year, he went 8-2 with a 0.63 earned run average, while throwing two no-hitters.
In the World Series, Shawaryan finished with 16 innings pitched, 20 strikeouts and no walks.
Brandon Hagerla received the loss for the Leghorns, giving up three earned runs in four innings for the Leghorns, pitching in some bad luck. Of the 10 hits he gave up, only two were hit hard. The ball just found holes for Brooklawn.
Scott Hilbert replaced Hagerla, throwing 1 2/3 innings, giving up two earned runs. Dom Gariham recorded one out, relieving Hilbert. Dom Deville finished the game, getting two outs and gave up four earned runs.
