Gabe Medina returned the game-starting kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, opening the door for a very impressive 53-12 Petaluma High school varsity football victory over Jefferson’s Indians from Daly City Friday night.
Before the final whistle forced the door closed, Medina had raced through it for three more touchdowns and 200 rushing yards on just eight carries, averaging 25 yards every time he broke through the Jefferson front line.
While Medina was the most impressive player on the Steve Ellison Field, he wasn’t the only Trojan who contributed to their most impressive offensive explosion in three years. Eight other Petalumans carried the ball as they pile up 367 yards rushing and 376 yards in total offense.
Quarterback Patrick Bailey gained 59 yards on eight carries and scored three touchdowns of his own,
The infantry assault was made possible by the outstanding grunt work turned in by the front line of Dante Del Prete, Justin Mahrt, Chris Temple, Travis Plank, Nick McCloskey and tight end Hunter Williams.
So dominant was the Petaluma offense that the Trojans never punted once the entire game.
Meanwhile, the Petaluma defense had a few moments of frustration trying to deal with talented Jefferson sophomore quarterback Damaari Davis and bowling-ball running back William David, but generally played well.
Petaluma forced three turnovers with Williams and Brandon Marweg intercepting passes and line stalwart Jeremy Spaletta recovering a fumble.
Spaletta and Nick McCloskey plugged up the middle of the line all evening, while linebackers Medina, Williams, Nikko Respeto and Kevin Crudo ranged from sideline to sideline hauling down Indian runners before they could gain momentum.
In chronological order, Petaluma touchdowns came from Medina on his kickoff return, Medina on a 44-yard blast and Medina on 25-yard explosion. That was just in the first quarter. There followed Medina on a 19-yard run, Bailey on a 9-yard runs, Donavan Reece on an 11-yard pitch play, Bailey on a 13-yard keep and Bailey on a 4-yard run in the game’s final minute.
The win evened the Petaluma record at 2-2 going into its Sonoma County League opener Sept. 28 at Piner.
Jefferson is now 0-3 for the season.
