After a tentative start playing scrimmages and Foundation Games that don’t count on records, area high school basketball teams get serious about the court season this week.

Highlight of the early, early season will be a rivalry showdown on Wednesday between the Petaluma and Casa Grande girls teams in the Petaluma gym.

Both teams will be seeking improvement over last season when Casa’s Gauchos were 13-13 and Petaluma’s T-Girls finished 9-17. Casa comes into the Petaluma gym with several veteran players such as Cassidy McKinney, Mia Cain and Hannah Sullivan leading the way. Petaluma is looking for a new start under the direction of new coach Jon Ratshin. The T-Girls have just two seniors, Emily O’Keefe and Marcie George, on its roster.

Petaluma follows up with a game Dec. 1 at Menlo School, while Casa Grande has a home game against Healdsburg on Dec. 2.

The St. Vincent girls begin the tournament season in the Lady Viking Classic hosted by Victory Christian in Charmicael Dec. 1 through Dec. 3.

On the boys side, Casa Grande, under second-year head coach Jake Lee, gets its first taste of tournament life in the McKinleyville Tip-Off Classic Dec. 1 through Dec. 3.

Soccer begins its second season as a winter sport with Petaluma hosting Novato on Dec. 1 and Casa Grande playing at DeAnza on Dec. 2.
