Petaluma Opinion

  • A new (old) idea is coming

    By Grayson James
    Thursday March 11, 2010 6:46 pm

Every once in a while, a new idea comes along that makes so much sense, you wonder why somebody didn’t think of it sooner. And sometimes, the new idea isn’t new at all, but simply an old idea whose time has truly come again.

  • Tribal casino: The whole truth

    By Marilee Montgomery
    Thursday March 11, 2010 6:40 pm

The Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria’s guest commentary in the Argus-Courier March 4 talks about how pointless, useless and maybe even ridiculous it is to allow the residents of Sonoma County the opportunity to voice their opinion on tribal casino projects.

  • Do the projects right

    Thursday March 11, 2010 3:00 am

Editor: I respectfully disagree with Karen Clark’s letter in which she envisions an improved Petaluma without big box stores. But I also disagree with my friend Don Bennett.

  • Think outside the box

    Thursday March 11, 2010 3:00 am

Editor: In the March 4 edition of the Argus, specifically the Opinion page, Karen Clark indicated that she took issue with the Target and Dutra developments. She urges that both proposals be fought and denied and that alternatives be found.

  • Comcast’s ‘valued customers’

    Thursday March 11, 2010 3:00 am

Editor: Nearly every correspondence I get from Comcast begins with the phrase, “Dear valued customer.” Yet, in a sardonic move, Comcast values me so much that it has closed its Petaluma office — with no warning, explanation or correspondence. (Oh, there was a fine print “notice” on my last bill, easily overlooked. This advised me that I must now travel to the Rohnert Park Comcast office store.)

  • Healthy food in schools

    Thursday March 11, 2010 3:00 am

Editor: Throughout my years as a student in the Petaluma City School District, I have noticed a reoccurring problem: unhealthy food choices in the cafeteria.

  • Crutches for Haiti

    Wednesday March 10, 2010 3:36 pm

Editor: Thank you to all who contributed crutches, donations, energy and love to the Crutches for Haiti drive in Petaluma last month.

  • Thank you, Basin Street

    Wednesday March 10, 2010 3:34 pm

Editor: As a community campaign to raise awareness and funds to end violence against women and girls, V-Day Petaluma operates with no overhead and no administrative fees, and is run strictly by volunteers.

  • Casino will be good for county

By the Tribal Council of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria
    Friday March 5, 2010 3:00 am

In your Feb. 18 editorial (“Inaction may have killed chance for casino measure”), you puzzle over why all nine Sonoma County mayors took no action on a casino advisory measure. Yet the answer is obvious: Whether or not they support our project, the mayors did not want to spend the money on a meaningless advisory measure that would have done more harm than good.

  • Give credit to the community for opposing Dutra and preserving open space

By Joan Cooper, Sheri Chlebowski, Cat Canto, Ilka de Gast and Julia Luna
    Friday March 5, 2010 3:00 am

As spring arrives in Petaluma, I am grateful to live in a community so blessed with nature’s bounty. I went to Shollenberger Park recently and the birds are plentiful, skimming over the water in graceful flight. People are out walking, biking, and pushing strollers along the path, enjoying the views of the now green hills and the fresh air.

  • Teen explains Phoenix jump

    Thursday March 4, 2010 3:00 am

Editor: First of all, I would like to make clear that the Phoenix Theater is my home away from home. I see amazing things happen in that building all the time. I see kids picking up instruments and playing them with such passion.

  • Dare to be different

    Thursday March 4, 2010 3:00 am

Editor: I am grateful for the views expressed by Matt Maguire and for the points outlined by Don Bennett on the Target/Regency conundrum (Feb. 18). (As for the asphalt plant, well, Aimi Dutra’s opinion is hardly unbiased.)
